Navy and Mustard Yellow are Complementary Colors

I have a slight obsession right now with the colors navy and mustard. My husband thinks it is because I live in Ann Arbor, home of the maize and blue Michigan Wolverines. In reality though my reasoning is deeper than that. I have always been interested in color theory as a good understanding of color theory can help one plan an outfit or a design scheme for a room. Navy is a basic color that is in almost every woman’s wardrobe. There are many ways to style navy, but navy and mustard are one of my favorite ways.

Navy and mustard yellow are what are called “complementary colors”, that is opposite each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors are those that are directly across from each other on the color wheel. These colors are highly contrasting and look very bold when put together. Navy is directly across from orange and this is why mustard yellow (very close to orange on the color wheel) works so well with it.

So on to my outfit. I decided to pair my older J. Crew Pencil Skirt in mustard yellow (size 2 petite) with my Banana Republic merino wool sweater. The skirt is sold out but Bloomingdales sells one very similar to it. To really tie the outfit together I added both texture and color with a navy and yellow plaid scarf from Modcloth. The scarf really elevates the outfit and brings it together. To complete the outfit I wore my navy Cole Haan Sandals and my navy GiGi New York Jenni saddle bag. This was a perfect fall outfit for work and I got so many complements on it too!

Thanks for looking!
