Who Is The Hero in Your Life?
Recently adidas reached out to me for the opportunity to collaborate with a question in mind. They asked me to tell my readers who I consider to be the biggest hero in my life. I don’t delve into my personal life that much, but honestly it is a very easy question for me to answer, which is why I thought this would be a great post to do. We all have heroes in our lives, the people we look up to, the people who inspire and motivate us. A hero is someone who you respect, who shares your beliefs and values, and who is there for you when you need them most. Who is the hero in my life? Without question it is my dad.
He Was There For Me From The Beginning
My dad as I call him, is really my stepdad. My mother and father divorced when I was one and she remarried when I was two. So my stepdad is really the only father I have ever known. And he raised me like I was his daughter too. My dad was always the person I turned to whenever I had an issue, and he always listens kindness, and with an open heart and mind. He has that nurturing sort of personality that I consider one of the best qualities a father can have. One of the fondest memories of my childhood that I have with my dad is our long walks in the woods, and the many times he took me fishing or stargazing. My dad made sure to spend quality time with me and my siblings, and that is to this day why we have a close relationship.
He Taught Me Unconditional Love
Our parents are the people who are always there for us, no matter what we do or the mistakes we made. Growing up my dad taught me “tough love” and the importance of personal responsibilty, but no matter what he was and is always there for me. So often we doubt ourselves, and we question whether or not we deserve to be loved. My dad over and over again, showed me that was definitely not the case. No matter how big the fight or disagreement we might have had, my dad always took it in stride and never personally. If there were ever a person who exemplified what it means to give unconditional love, without fault it is my dad!
He Never Turned His Back on Me
No matter what is going on in my dad’s life, he always puts his children’s concerns first. Day in and day out he never stops giving his best for his family. When we were kids, it was dad who helped get us to school, and was there to make dinner for us when we came home (my mom worked the evening shift as a nurse). He was there for our school activities, and all the important milestones in our lives. My dad is selfless to no end, and to this day it is obvious to all of us just how much our dad loves us.
He Inspires Me To Be A Better Person
My dad really is my inspiration! When I was younger he taught me to be inquisitive about the world around me. He always expected me to do my best, whatever it was, because he believed in me. He was a runner when he was younger, and honestly that is what inspires me to keep running to this day. My dad was my biggest supporter when I said I wanted to go to medical school, even though he actually never finished college. He is the most intellectual person I know, even without a college degree. I wouldn’t be the person I am today, if it weren’t for my dad!
He Is The Biggest Fighter I Know
It was over two years ago that I got the call from my mom, that my dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. And it wasn’t just a small cancer, but stage four metastatic esophageal cancer. He is not a surgical candidate, and the physician in me knows he will die of this disease (it has a 20% 5 year survival rate). But my dad is the most resilient person I know! By the grace of God he is still here. He has endured all the chemotherapy a person can endure, and he does it with grace, and a smile on his face. He is on what I call “The Jimmy Carter Drug” (Keytruda) and, knock on wood, it seems to be working. And he can still eat and do all the things he loves doing. So there were going to be anyone that is a part of that 20% statistic it is going to be my dad!
(My dad walking me down the aisle on my wedding day – sorry for the blurry snapshot but it’s what I have)
I know my dad won’t be here forever, and I cherish every last day that he is here. He is my biggest supporter, and I know he will be there for his family as long as he can! I am a better person for having known my dad.
Who are the heroes in your life?
As always, thanks for stopping by!

Il faudrait que je me remette au sport mais j’ai eu quelques soucis physiques qui m’en ont empêché ( actuellement entorse ). c’est un très bel article !
Such a sweet story! I could have written almost the same post about my dad, other than the being a stepfather part. Even down to the cancer, as my dad was diagnosed with melanoma about a year ago but after surgery and radiation, he is medically cleared! He (and my mom) were always supportive of my sister and me. My dad and I are very much alike, he taught me so many things that most girls don’t learn (my way around cars, electrical work, I can completely set up and take down our travel trailer, I know how to put a boat in and out of the water, etc.). Also, I really want this outfit, it looks so comfortable!
Thank you Stephanie! I am so glad your dad is doing better too.
What a beautiful and touching tribute to your dad! And I love the outfit, too.
