Erwin Orchards Southeastern Michigan
Ever since having kids, it has become a yearly tradition to head to the apple orchard to pick apples in the fall. The kids just have so much fun doing it, and so do I. We used to live in Las Vegas, and they only had one apple orchard, and it was a sad one at that. But since moving to Michigan, there are so many orchards, it can be hard to know which one to go to. Michigan is known for their apple orchards, and I have to say Michigan apples are some of the best apples I have tasted. Our favorite orchard by far though is Erwin Orchards, in South Lyon, Michigan. This is one of the largest orchards in Southeastern Michigan, and they have a large variety of U-Pick apples (including honeycrisp apples!). Erwin Orchards also has a large play area for the kids, complete with a petting zoo, hay bales, and several bounce houses. My kids have such a blast every time we go here.
A few of my other favorite orchards include Plymouth Orchards and Cider Mill. This is not a U-pick apple orchard, but you can get some amazing, fresh donuts and cider there. They have a large petting zoo and a tractor ride as well. Wiards Orchard in Ypsilanti, Michigan is another favorite. The apple trees at this orchard are a bit smaller, but they also have a U-pick pumpkin patch, several rides and bounce houses, and the coolest haunted tractor ride we have ever had the opportunity to ride. You really want to go Wiards for the carnival experience, as this orchard is less about apples. However they do have tasty cider and donuts. There are so many other orchards though, and we haven’t had the opportunity to see them all.
BP Oblong Plaid Scarf
As for my outfit, we’ve had some relatively warm fall weather, so that means light scarves are in order. I love the colors in this BP Oblong Plaid scarf, and the soft fringe detail makes this scarf look really nice. I’ve had this navy J. Crew Factory puffer vest since last year, and I’m glad to see it is back in stock this year. Right now, for the Columbus Day weekend, this jacket is 50% off as well (no code needed). This is just a nice staple vest for your wardrobe. It also comes in five additional colors, if navy is not quite your style.
Citizens of Humanity Cara High Waist Ankle Jeans
I’ve been stocking up on jeans for the fall, but I have to say that the Citizens of Humanity Cara high waist jeans are my favorite of the season. These jeans have a 27.5″ inseam, which is perfect for my petite frame. The high-waist style makes my legs look longer, and looks really nice at the waist (especially after having four kids). These jeans do cost a little more than most jeans, but I am a firm believer that quality jeans are an investment that will last for years.

Simple Apple Crisp Pie
So what do you do with all of those apples that you pick for the season? There are literally hundreds of creative ways to cook with apples, but of course apple pie is my all-time favorite. I’ve made more complex, and time-consuming apple pies in the past, but this year I wanted to keep it simple. I love apple crisp, and this pie is a creative variation on this fall classic. There is no need to make your own crust (though I did for this recipe) and you don’t have to worry about creating a top structure for your pie. This pie was quick and easy to make, (about 15 minutes) and it only lasted for a few ours before my family decided to eat it! An easy tip for cooking apple pie – use a pie crust shield (I use this one) to keep your crust from burning at the edges. Take it off the last 10 minutes of cooking so the edge can cook properly.
- 8 Granny Smith apples
- 1 unbaked pastry shell
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 c. flour
- 1/3 c. butter
- Peel apples, slice, and arrange in unbaked pastry shell. Sprinkle with 1/2 c. sugar, mixed with cinnamon. Stir together remaining 1/2 c. sugar with flour. Cut butter into sugar and flour until very crumbly.
- Bake in hot oven at 450 degrees for ten minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 30 minutes, until apples are tender.
