The Concerns About Chemical Sunscreens

It feels like we skipped over spring and the summer weather is already here! The warmer temperatures are finally upon us. And that means my kids are spending hours on end playing outside and swimming at the pool. All of my children are very fair-skinned and prone to sunburns. This means that means a good sunscreen is even more important! I learned many years ago about the concerns about using chemical based sunscreens.  Chemical sunscreens soak into your skin and absorb the sun’s rays AFTER they’ve entered your body. Chemical sunscreens work by using UV filters such as oxybenzone.  Oxybenzone is known to cause allergic reactions.  Some studies suggest it can even cause hormone disruption in children and adults. So why use a chemical sunscreen when you can use a mineral-based sunscreen that reflect most of the sun’s rays BEFORE they enter your body?

The older I have become, the more conscientious I have become about the long term effects of sun exposure on our skin. Gone are the days where I would make regular appointments at the tanning bed or laying on the beach with no sunscreen at all. Now you will see me applying SPF 50 to my face on a daily basis, and you will often find me in a hat. But all the negative effects the sun has on our skin actually begins in childhood. That is why I have become obsessed about putting sunscreen on my kids! I first learned about the Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen difference several years ago when my girls were little, and I’ve been using it on all my kids ever since then!

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen begins with a natural, not chemical base.  Zinc Oxide, a key mineral in all of the Blue Lizard formulas, is a natural ingredient that provides true broad-spectrum protection from UV rays. Zinc Oxide acts as millions of tiny mirrors on top of your skin and reflect most of the sun’s rays before they enter your body.  Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreens have been dermatologist recommended for over 20 years and are trusted by moms like me who understand the science behind sunscreens.

He loves the Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen for Kids because he can watch the bottle turn blue in response to exposure to harmful UV rays. I like it because it is formulated to protect always-on-the-go kids, wherever they go. 1. Blue Lizard sunscreen products sound amazing! We just moved to the beach so I pretty much live in sunscreen and am always looking for good products. I’ll have to check Blue Lizard out. Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. You’re right, it’s so important to be aware of the ingredients in sunscreen! There are too many chemicals being used today and it’s always good to check something before placing it on our skin! Thanks for introducing me to this brand, will surely check it out!

  3. So glad my mom taught me about sun safety when I was little! It’s so important and your son will thank you when he’s older!

  4. I like physical sunscreens better as well! I always use sunscreen and do wish I had been more liberal with it in my younger years. I’ll check this brand out this summer!

  5. Your son is too cute! I haven’t heard of this sunscreen brand but I’ll need to keep an eye out for it this summer!

  6. I wish kids understood how bad is the sun. I also used to spend HOURS under the sun with ni protection. Now that I’m an adult I feel almost scared about going out without SPF because I know how bad the effect could be. Thanks for sharing this product, not all sunblock creams are the same and this one sounds a good one!! xx

  7. This was such a good post– I don’t think many people know the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens. Sun protection is SO important. Great read!

  8. Sunscreen is so important- especially for children. Most of sun damage to our skin occurs in childhood. Great that the Blue Lizard is so easy to apply and lasts long enough to enjoy a fun play date in the park!

  9. I’ve been using the Blue Lizard Baby (pink cap) sunscreen for many years now, on myself and my child because it is a mineral sunscreen containing 2 minerals, zinc & titanium. Please be aware that the blue cap bottle is not interchangeable with the pink bottle. It is NOT a purely mineral sunscreen. Please take a look at the ingredients list on back of bottle. It contains zinc but ALSO octinoxate which can mimic hormones and octocrylene which can be a skin irritant, according to the Envorinmental Working Group (EWG).
