Holland Michigan Tulip Time Festival
Greetings from Holland, Michigan! I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s day weekend. We took the time as a family to go on a small road trip to Holland, Michigan. I’ve always heard so much about the Tulip Time Festival, and we made it a point to take the 2 hour drive up there to see what it was all about. And, oh my gosh, this is a serious festival! People travel from all over the world to see the largest collection of tulips (outside of the Netherlands) and all the festivities to celebrate the spring bloom. There is so much to do at this festival, which typically is held during the first two weeks of May. There are concerts, parades, authentic food, a Dutch market, people in Dutch costumes, and even fireworks! But the star attraction is the 6+ million tulip blooms that are bursting with color this time of year. If you like flowers like I do, they are definitely a sight to see!
DeZwann Windmill on Windmill Island
We were only there for the weekend, so we made sure to head to Windmill Island Gardens as soon as we arrived. We came here not only to see the 100,000 tulips, but also to see the DeZawann windmill. This is the only authentic, operational Dutch windmill in the United States. This windmill was thought to have been orignially built in 1761, then moved to the village of Vinkel in North Brabant, The Netherlands. It was here that it it produced flour for eighty years. Later on the windmill was dismantled, shipped to the United States, and reassembled in 1964.
Other Places to See Tulips in Holland, Michigan
Windmill Isand was beautiful, but it was definitely packed with people. There must have been at least 1000 people there when we came. It took some creative shooting and editing to get the shots that we did while here! The next time we go, I will definitely go on a Photo Walk, so that we can capture photos without masses of people in the pictures. But if you just want to see tulips, you can head to the Veldheer Tulip Farm. Here you will see the 6+million tulip bulls they plant each year. Or you can head downtown and tour the six miles of Tulip Lanes where you can see over 200,000 blooms and you walk along the streets.
I knew with all the walking we would be doing that I wanted to dress casual for the day. So I decided to wear this comfy yet stylish J. Crew Factory striped dress. The day was definitely chilly (with highs in the mid 50’s) so I was glad to have this J. Crew white denim jacket. And these cherry red espadrilles from J. Crew factory are perfect for long walks through the city.
The family and I had such a great time when we went to the Holland Michigan Tulip Time Festival. There is just so much to see and do. You could spend a week there and not see everything there is to see. We got to explore downtown a bit while there too, to see all the charming shops and restaurants around the city. Everyone was so friendly and charming too! If you live in the Midwest, and are looking for a fun spring getaway, I highly recommend the Holland, Michigan Tulip Time Festival!
Thanks for stopping by! And please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments.
