How to Shop Sensibly for the Holidays

Today’s post is slightly different for me. I have to say that the holidays are my favorite time of the year! Decorating my home for the holidays is so much fun and my kids love it too. It is also a wonderful time when we get to see extended family. And my kids literally start planning out their Christmas lists right after Halloween. I am more than happy to oblige their wishes as the expression on their faces Christmas morning is just priceless! That being said, with the holidays upon us, it can be far too easy to go overboard spending money on gifts for loved ones. There are several key things to keep in mind when it comes to holiday shopping.

1. Start shopping early – When you have time to plan your holiday shopping you will be more organized in your approach. Generally sales happen earlier (such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday). And when you shop early you generally can get a better price when it comes to shopping.  Procrastinating only encourages rushed shopping, and regret about overspending. Not to mention you might end up paying higher shipping fees. If you start shopping early, you can spread the expenses out over several months too, which can always help with the holiday shopping budget.

2. Create a holiday shopping list – It isn’t terribly hard to remember your immediate family such as her spouse or your children, what about extended family? Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and even friends are all people to keep in mind.  Don’t forget about including items such as a hostess gift, or a gift for your boss or assistant. If you have a large extended family perhaps shopping for everyone is not reasonable.  In that scenario perhaps doing a gift exchange between two people is a better idea. Once you’ve made your list, keep it with you and refer to it often.

3. Set a realistic budget – This is probably the most important thing to remember when it comes to holiday shopping.  Everyone has a different budget in mind but setting a budget and sticking to it is very important when it comes to holiday shopping.  And don’t forget about the little things such as wrapping paper, cards, and postage.

4. Do your research – When it comes to gift giving, shopping online is a great way to compare prices for the gifts you want to buy. So many retailers are offering discounts so definitely search for a coupon, even if it is for free shipping. I personally love online shopping, both for the convenience and it is so much easier to find exactly what I want.

5. Put thought into giving – Sometimes it is the little things that matter most to people. If you can’t afford monetary gifts, then consider giving something as simple as a photo book or scrapbook. Even a “coupon book” the recipient can use later shows someone else just how much you care about them.

I try to follow this advice myself when it comes to shopping for my family, so hopefully these tips will also help you!
