Shop Wisely When Buying Investment Pieces

When it comes to fashion, certain investment pieces are worth the extra money you pay to get them. When considering an investment piece, you should ask yourself, “Is it going to last for several seasons?”. You should also ask, “Is the piece versatile and can I wear it with many different outfits?”. Finally, ask yourself “Did I love it the minute I saw it, and did I still want it several days/weeks later?”. If you answered yes to all three, and you are looking to add items that are not just trendy but classic, then they are worth paying the extra money to obtain.

Just because a piece costs more, doesn’t mean you should’nt shop wisely. Investment pieces can and do go on sale. The Burberry trench coat, I actually got over the summer on Bluefly when no-one was thinking about buying a trench. This particular trench I am wearing retails for over 2K, but I paid less than 1K for it. I am so glad I did so because I know this trench will last me for years. My Stuart Weitzman Highland boots I actually got on Tradesey practically brand new, and I saved several hundred dollars off of the retail price by doing so. When I am buying investment pieces such as bags and even jewelry, I will look at various sites such as Trendlee, TheRealReal, Vestaire Collective and even E-bay (you do have buyer protection on E-bay) before deciding where to ultimately buy a piece.

It is worthwhile to shop around, but some pieces are worth paying full retail price. My Chanel WOC and sunglasses both were bought new, directly from a major retailer. After looking for vintage Chanel bags, they were either obviously used, or the price was so close to that of a brand new bag, that I decided buying it brand new from a reputable major retailer was reasonable.

I have worn these pieces separately on numerous occasions. I decided to put them all together by wearing a simple black turtleneck sweater dress. The end result is that I have a classic, sophisticated, timeless look that is in style now and will likely be in style for years to come. The investment I made by making smart shopping decisions will provide me with great enjoyment for the long run.

Thanks for looking!

  1. This is one of my favorite looks of you today!! I love the black with the camel color! Plus a good trench is everything!! And I got to be honest your hair like that is so cute! Happy Monday!

  2. I have to agree totally about this post. I need to invest more in classic timeless pieces than will see me through many years instead of multiple high fashion items that last one season. Lovely items and fabulous pictures

  3. I LOVE finding investment pieces for a fraction of the cost! I am the BIGGEST by far deal hunter and every time I go to an affluent city I find the best second hand store. I have dresses that would normally cost 1,000’s of dollars for 80$ barely worn, I have found Loubitons for $40.00 because the shop owner had no idea..I love the thrill of it to! I have to check out tradesy, I briefly went on but not long enough to search through! Thanks for the tips!!

  4. oh my gosh I love this post and I love that trench coat! I used to never invest in pieces like this until I cleaned out my closet one year and noticed the piles and piles of clothes I was giving away because they just didnt seem to last but I had just a few items I inherited from my mom that have been around for years and still looked brand new! So I decided that I would start investing my money on pieces I know will last more than a lifetime.

    Thanks for sharing darling,

  5. I love all of these classic pieces! I’ve recently started investing more in ‘investment pieces’ as well. I totally agree that you can find great deals (my favorite being Snobswap- I scored a pair of Nude Prada pumps that were practically new!) and also sometimes it’s better to buy from a retailer (just depends what you’re looking for).

    Great post!

  6. I’ve always admired Burberry coats and I really love this one. Great idea with the smart shopping to find pieces discounted. I love your outfit – you look amazing!

  7. All three of those questions are really good to ask yourself! I like the last one because sometimes I will get home and feel bad that I didn’t get it, so that’s how I know!

  8. Hi April, this is a great post! I completely agree with your statements; invest in pieces you love that will last years & stay classic. And I also shop around a lot and wait for sales – I recently took the leap to purchase the Burberry Daylesmoore wool coat when it went on sale at Bloomingdale’s – I snatched it up for <$500 when it retails for $1100. I also have purchased my Aquatalia boots and Tory Burch wallet/clutches at significant discounts at TheRealReal, Last Call Neiman Marcus and Tory Burch.
