Tips for Staying Warm and Stylish in the Winter

If you have been reading my blog, you might have noticed I have a slight obsession with staying warm. I absolutely cannot stand to be cold! Extremes of temperature at both ends actually bother me (having lived in Las Vegas before I can tell you anything over 105 degrees is just as miserable). So I spend quite a bit of time obsessing on how to stay warm pretty much at all times. Of course, it is a bonus if I can dress both warm and stylish, so today’s post is all about how to accomplish this.

Layering is Key

In these cold winter months, layering is key to staying warm. One easily can put on a giant hooded puffer jacket underneath a simple outfit to stay warm, which is usually what I see people doing. I personally think it is more fun and functional to wear many layers. Layering is not only effective at keeping you warm, but it is a great way to add style. Plus if it gets too hot, it is just as easy to take off a few layers. I can tell you after we took these pictures, we were running around town doing errands, and I was practically sweating by the end of the day.

Start with a Warm Base Layer

A warm base layer is essential for staying warm and stylish in the winter. I personally love turtleneck sweaters because the keep my neck warm too. I love a basic cream cable knit sweater, because it looks stylish on it’s own, but is easy to layer. The one I am wearing is sold out but this and this cable knit sweater are both very similar.

If you don’t want to wear something as bulky as a cable-knit turtleneck, there are several options that are more thin, yet still warm. Uniqlo offers their Heattech line in a turtleneck which is meant to retain heat. Land’s End is known for their Thermaskin products such as this turtleneck, which would also be a great option.

Balance Textures and Proportion

There are so many ways to look warm and stylish in the winter by playing with textures and proportion. Here I am wearing this adorable pink checkered jacket by Endless Rose (this jacket by their sister company is identical and it’s on sale). The jacket is somewhat large on my petite frame, so I balanced it with skinny jeans. The overall effect makes me look thinner and my outfit more streamlined. As a different example, if you are wearing chunky boots, balance it with a more tailored jacket (as I did in this post).

Use different fabrics to add interest to your winter looks. In this post I balanced a more bulky leopard coat with a lace peplum top with a belt at the waist. Overall this creates a feminine look that is fashionable as well.

Add a Scarf

It almost goes without saying that a scarf is a great way to add style to your outfit. Scarves are one of my favorite ways to look warm and stylish. The office where I work tends to be cold, so often I will wear a thicker scarf the entire day. I have found by keeping my core warm, the rest of my body tends to stay fairly warm as well. When it comes to a scarf the possibilities are endless! The scarf should in some way complement the rest of your outfit. Given that the jacket I am wearing in this post has a distinctive checkered pattern, I balanced the pattern in my jacket with this scarf of a similar hue. This scarf, made of a wool/cashmere blend is so soft and warm! It comes in five colors and is a steal at under $23.

Keep Your Head Warm

You wouldn’t go out in shorts in the winter, so why leave your head uncovered? A hat is essential piece to stay warm and stylish in the winter. There are so many stylish hats available, beanies of any kind, trapper hats, newsboy hats, and fedoras. My favorite trend this year has been the beret! This homage to Paris fashion will make any outfit look instantly chic. I have seen many more expensive berets, but this beret hands down from Amazon is my favorite. This wool beret is well-constructed, fits well, and comes in 11 colors (and you could have all of them since they are under $14!).

So what’s the weather like for you? What are your ideas for staying warm and stylish in the winter?

I hope you have found these tips helpful!

As always, thanks for looking!

  1. I HATE being cold!! LOL! I can not stand it! I’m in central Illinois. The weather here is constantly changing! Tomorrow its going to be in the 50’s. I can handle that. But by the weekend, its going to be back down in the teens! I would just love to hibernate all winter! LOL! But I guess I can’t do that! I love all of your images and outfits! Makes me want to go shopping!!

  2. I’d definitely have to throw on a pair of leggings under ripped jeans, or forgo the holes in jeans altogether. That cold air hitting my kneecaps would make me miserable! I’d also throw on a pair of booties or boots to cover up my feet! I don’t mind being covered head-to-toe when there’s snow on the ground, LOL!

  3. I’m not a big hat person, but I love coats and scarves. I grew up in California, but since moving to a snowy climate I’ve had to learn to dress warm.

  4. Great tips! I hate being cold too! I dont know if I could pull off this much pink at once, but you are rocking it! Love that you styled that edgy purse with the soft, feminine coat!

  5. You give so much style to the cold-weather wear! I hate the cold weather, and if it was cold enough to be snowing I would be in so many layers you would only see my eyes! I love this outfit, though, it’s adorable!

  6. Pink is a fantastic color on you. I love all your tips about layers. I have been freezing all week and need to do something about it.

  7. I am from Minnesota and I can attest that keeping your head warm and layering are keys! But, can we stop and talk about your outfit for a minute? Absolutely gorgeous!!!!

  8. How cute is this whole outfit!!! It is winter here for me and this would be so fun to wear. I love the pink everything. I don’t tend to wear pastels in the winter but why not? This whole look is great.

  9. This winter is so cold that I don’t even want to go out. I am so grateful for your post so I could still remain warm and stylish.

  10. I am loving this pink outfit April! And such helpful tips for staying warm during the winter! I also love the beret trend and own a taupe color that was very helpful during a winter trip to Chicago đŸ™‚

  11. OMG I am all about staying warm to, scarves are a huge part of that. I love love this outfit. It’s adorable and the picture of you throwing the snow is awesome. I am still struggling with finding the right hat/beanie, but I’m getting there!

  12. Layering is always the part of style I struggle with the most. The weather out in Southern California can be so bizarre. And so how much to put on and how much you can take off in any circumstance is difficult during winters. But I do know how essential it is.

  13. First off I hate being cold in the winter, so all of these accessories are definitely necessary. Secondly, I love your outfit in the pictures, especially the coat and shoes! I am going to have to find one just like it, so pretty. Thank you for sharing these great tips!
