Make it a Priority

The beginning of the new year is always about resolutions and goals. While I don’t set definite resolutions (such as lose x amount of weight or exercise x times a week) I do at the very least set goals and reset my priorities. It is a fact of life if you don’t make something a priority, it will fall by the wayside. So as the new year arrives, make notes to yourself (and write it down!) about what you are going to do to improve your health and overall fitness. Because when you decide you want to do it, it becomes much easier to do so! My patients ask me all the time what they can do to be in better shape, and I tell them to start with small goals and build up from that. I will say this method has definitely worked for me, as reaching a small goal every day is much easier that reaching a large goal all at once.

Be Ready for the Moment

As a busy mom and physician, it can be so hard to find the time to exercise! Often times I am running to the gym, and then heading to the grocery store or taking the kids to practice as soon as I’m done. So it really helps to wear clothes that work for the gym and beyond. This is why I love the new J.Jill Fit Collection. This collection of petite-friendly tops, leggings, outerwear and shoes works for any busy woman that is constantly on the go. Whether you are working out, running around town, or just lounging around, these pieces work for your life. They are stretchy, comfortable, and flattering at the same time! In today’s post I am wearing these fleece-lined leggings (so warm!), this comfy white crew neck tee, and this classic grey wrap top. And right now you can get $20 off all full-price styles with code 20FIT.

Make it A Group Affair

As a mom of four kids this is definitely what I do! I started running 5K’s with my youngest daughter when she was 7. We trained using Couch25K and trained three times a week doing exactly what the app told us to do. After three months of training we were more than prepared to run our first 5K together! Since that time my oldest daughter joined in and we ran another 5K last summer. Now my son who is 7 wants to join in on the fun, so we will do a 5K with all three kids this summer. If you don’t have kids, go to a group class or join a running club. I just find exercising to be quite boring at times, and by doing it together (with some upbeat music) exercising is actually kind of fun!

Use My Fitness Pal

My Fitness Pal is by far my favorite app for keeping track of what I eat in a day and how much I exercise. When using it consistently you are accountable for everything you do. When I lost all my baby weight I used My Fitness Pal to make sure I ate 1200 calories/day (more if I exercised) and to keep track of my activity. I used my FitBit to make sure I achieved 10,000 steps/day (even if it just meant running around the house) .I was able to sync my Fitbit with My Fitness Pal to show what my calories in/calories out were for the day. Slowly but surely I lost 1-2 pounds a week until I reached my goal weight. And I like that My Fitness Pal shows me the ratios to carbohydrates/fat/protein. You are certainly better off eating lots of fruits and vegetables (and if it’s white don’t eat it!).

Remember the Why

Above all else, remember that your health is all you’ve got. Your body is your temple and if you don’t treat it right, you are truly doing yourself a disservice. And when you are healthy and fit, you feel good about yourself. When you feel good about yourself, others will notice too! And you will be an excellent role model for your children, spouse, friends, and extended family. What have you got to loose? Nothing, and you have everything to gain!

  1. I just discovered J. Jill last fall – have a pair of their bi-stretch cuffed ankle pants that are as comfortable as pajamas but look like dress pants! Perfect for my travels and I even wear them for long overnight flights 🙂 Heading over to your instagram right now to comment and enter for the giveaway!

  2. I am definitely going to download the My Fitness Pal app and link it to my fitbit like you did to try and stay on track this year.

  3. I agree the “why” is the most important part…it’s your motivator. Everyone should find their own personal “why”.

  4. I love that you advocate for smaller, obtainable goals versus trying to lose specific pounds, etc. This is the approach I plan to take in 2019. I will be scheduling blocks on my outlook calendar to workout and to focus on wellness. Blocking out time for myself and my goals is the easiest way to ensure I will meet them.

  5. Hey April, love your blog. Always impressed with all you accomplish! I do have one problem with your site; I have trouble reading the light gray font that you have chosen. It looks great stylistically speaking but unless I have my readers with me I can barely make it out on my phone (which is how I always read blogs). Wish I always had my readers, but sometimes I don’t. Thanks for “hearing me out”!

    1. Kelly…Thank you! And I welcome feedback such as yours. I took it to heart and made it darker too!
