Classic Winter Wardrobe Essentials
Puxatony Phil was definitely not kidding when he predicted that six more weeks of winter would to be here. This week here in Michigan we have absolutely been pounded with snow. Today we got a massive 12 inches of snow and that meant school was canceled. I couldn’t even go into work because the highway was closed. So that definitely means that I am wearing winter clothes right now! I recently did a closet purge and my husband commented that he noticed I was keeping mainly basic pieces of clothing in my closet. I definitely think this is true as there are pieces that you know you will be able to wear season after season. It is those pieces that I decided to keep in my closet! When it comes to classic winter essentials there are four pieces that stand out to me more than others. That is what today’s post is all about.
Winter Wardrobe Essentials: A Black Wool Coat
When it comes to winter essentials, there is nothing more classic than a black wool coat. It’s like having a pair of black pants, or black heels. A black wool coat is something you will always reach for because it will go with just about everything in the winter. I have posted quite frequently about the Burberry Gibbsmore wool coat this season. This coat has been such an obsession of mine that I have it in three colors! I honestly don’t know why Burberry didn’t make more of this coat. It has been so popular this season that is sold out quite early. Luckily there are several other options currently available. I also love this equally as nice Fleurette classic Italian wool coat. This wool wrap coat by Fleurette has also caught my eye (and I especially love it in grey) . More affordable options include this Ralph Lauren wool coat and this wool blend walking coat.
Winter Wardrobe Essentials: A Classic Wool Beret
What is old this season is new again when it comes to the classic wool beret. This is one of this season’s trends that I have been most excited about! Perhaps it’s all those years that I spent taking French class that make me gravitate towards this trend. There are many variations of the beret. I actually like the simple wool beret best. That’s great because pretty much all of the berets I have purchased from Amazon. Amazon has so many different stylish and classic berets. And almost all of them are under $10! For something a little fancier there is this cashmere beret and this hand-knit beret. A beret is such an easy way to accessorize an outfit and instantly elevate it. And you don’t have to worry about bad hair!
Winter Wardrobe Essentials: A Classic Plaid Scarf
Nothing comes to mind more than a plaid scarf when it comes to classic winter wardrobe essentials. One of the first plaid scarves that I ever bought was a Burberry plaid scarf. I lost it somehow when we moved across the country, and to this day I regret that. This red and black scarf caught my eye when I noticed how much it stands out with black. Fortunately it costs a lot less than a Burberry scarf. This red and black plaid scarf would make a great statement when worn with black. Should I decide to invest in a Burberry scarf again, I would love to get this pretty pink and black cashmere scarf. Other stylish plaid scarf options available this season include this mauve and blue plaid scarf by Aqua and this colorful plaid scarf by J. Crew Factory.
Winter Wardrobe Essentials: Black Over The Knee Boots
And finally when it comes to classic winter wardrobe essentials you cannot go wrong with a pair of black over the knee boots. My black Stuart Weitzman boots I think are my most worn boots in my closet (see them here, here, and here)! Even though these boots have a fairly high heel, I can tell you these are some of the most comfortable boots I own. I have no problems wearing these all day at work. A stylish over the knee boot with a shorter skirt will make any woman look taller, and this is particularly true for petite women. To me these boots are practical as well because they’re warmer than pants. Though not over the knee, I’ve also been wearing Aquatalia Aquatalia black boots, especially on snowy, slushy days. More affordable options include these Stuart Weitzman Alljack boots (on sale!) and these Vince Camuto boots. Having owned several Vince Camuto boots, I can attest to their quality and comfort.
So if you’re like me and you live in an area where winter is not going away anytime soon be sure to check out these winter wardrobe essentials! Almost all of these pieces are on sale right now. When you purchase them you can be certain that you’re buying something that will be in style for years to come.
If you haven’t had a chance, there is still an opportunity to enter to win a $250 Nordstrom gift card. Read how to enter here.

That is a great look. In winter there are to issues keeping warm and still staying stylish. You are able to pill them both off and the look is all so good especially the scarf and boots.
I totally agree with the black wool coat. I don’t live in a cold weather spot anymore, but I grew up in Ohio and that was the #1 worn piece in my closet back in the day. Great post.

I love a classic black or grey wool coat, I just scored a new one on sale last month!! I am so over all this snow, we have almost 2 feet April, it’s nuts!!
I always loved a good classic black wool trench coat that will never go out of style and I still have mine that I bought over 10 yrs ago. I am on the lookout for a new one! You look fabulous and love how you styled it with a pop of red accessories ❤️
This is such a beautiful classic look, and those boots are to die for!
I love this post, and I’m right there with you! I’m all about basics right now, because that’s what I grab every day! I’m not grabbing the pretty gown or short mini dresses like I used to (although I’d love a fun occasion to wear one haha). So, I’m glad you did this post! If you have a few basics, choices really are endless for your wardrobe!

I love the scarf and the boots. I’m petite too and love this look, it looks so smart. You cannot go wrong with red and black.
I love the combination of the black and red. It’s timeless and beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration 🙂
You are right – all such timeless pieces for winter! I especially love the beret and scarf together!
A plaid scarf is most definitely necessary! I love your red one!
This is a kind of look that never goes out of style!
I want all of these! I don’t have any of it right now. The only winter clothes I have are super cheap since we don’t usually have much of a winter. I think my favorite is the boots!
Hi April! I always love coming to your blog on a weekly basis and seeing what you are wearing! Inspired by your style and selections and this luxe gorgeous look is no exception!
